McKesson Canada

McKesson Canada is a pharmaceutical distributor that delivers a third of all medications in Canada. They consult with patients at their pharmacies, and partner with members and stakeholders of the healthcare industry.

The regional office for McKesson Canada comprises of four key departments referred to internally as “Pods”. They are as follows: The Specialized Pod, The Shared Services Pod, The Home Delivery Pod, and The Infusion Pod.

The problem that was presented to me was that these departments were situated together in an open-concept office environment, making it difficult to distinguish where one department begins and ends. My task was to create separation and distinction between these departments, as well as the company lounge, by designing corresponding retractable banners. The banners would serve as visual markers to identify each space and represent each department.

I was provided with some rough visual identities and slogans that were generated by the employees of each pod. The client was looking for a corporate design that encompassed the ideas each pod provided. It also would serve as a positive visual to inspire the employees that would be passing these fixtures every day.

With the purpose of these banners clearly defined, I was able to quickly narrow down design decisions.

Each pod’s banner was to be colour-coded in order to visibly distinguish a pod’s area, even from a distance.

As these banners would become permanent fixtures in the office, I was mindful of selecting imagery that would make employees feel appreciated and emphasize the importance of their work. I deliberately chose stock photos highlighting the impact McKesson’s services has on clients, as well as photos illustrating employee collaboration. A large portion of the top of each banner would be dedicated to one of these images in order to create the biggest visual impact while maintaining layout consistency between each pod’s banner.

The vector icons and rounded square shapes on each banner were taken from McKesson’s brand guideline document, and specific icons were matched with specific departments according to the rough visual identities I received from each pod.

For the lounge banner, I decided to incorporate visuals from all four pods to emphasize the collectiveness and gathering that would occur in this space. The banner is divided into four sections, representing each pod, with the McKesson submark at the center.
